Retirees who Teach English Abroad

Stories from Satisfied Retirees Teaching English Abroad

For those who’ve made their mark in the world and are now looking for something deeper and more satisfying than a well-played round of golf, teaching English abroad or at home is just the ticket. Increasingly, retired people from across North America have started taking TESOL courses and are heading off for the challenge of teaching English abroad or at home. Community services helping local people in need of ESL are desperate for volunteer help with teaching. Alternately, the world is your oyster with a TEFL certificate in hand. Retirees have experience and that’s a hot commodity for many overseas employers, especially in the more lucrative business English market, where employers tend to hire people with a little more maturity and professional expertise.

Nancee’s Story

"I became unhappy and frustrated with life in the United States. Taxes going up, property values going down, increasing crime rate, etc. I had lived in Mexico City and in Madrid, Spain, but didn't speak Spanish at the time. As a 69 year old woman with no encumbrances, and very good health, I decided it was time for me to travel again.”

“I tutored while in Mexico City, but was hampered by the fact that I did not speak Spanish well. Ecuador looked like a good base as I had not visited most of the countries in South America before; this would give me a chance to do so, while living there. I learned Spanish and decided I needed to add more education to my existing Master's degrees in Education and in Psychology.”
