Volunteers who Teach English Abroad

Stories from Dedicated Volunteers Teaching English Abroad

People volunteer to teach for different reasons: some want to give back while others are looking for a meaningful way to improve their resumes. There are certainly opportunities to volunteer in a number of charities at home, but there are also loads of exciting volunteer teaching opportunities all over the world. Alternately, teaching English abroad can make a real difference for non-native English speakers in the US and you’ll find many programs in great need of volunteer teachers.

Janis’ Story

“I met my husband 3 years ago through a friend that asked if I would help him with his English by corresponding with him.”

“We both decided to volunteer at our local college with their ESL program. While I have a good job, he has not had as much success and we have decided to return to his native Peru, where he will have more opportunities for finding work. I would be able to take an early retirement and teach for the love of teaching. For me, teaching English will be an enjoyable adventure and allow me to perform a valuable service to a people that I have come to love and admire. I am intensely studying my Spanish, and hope to even learn Quechua once we are in Peru. I especially love working with children and hope to be able to use my TEFL with them.”
